CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT - 2010 - DAY REPORT BOURNEMOUTH

Sunny Bournemouth played host to the 2nd Champions Tournament in 2010 for Champion Soccer teams.

The countries premier 6 aside venue – The Littledown Centre, home to over 100 league teams on 3 nights – were the perfect hosts and as teams from Essex, Oxford and Cambridge all arrived, all were wondering why their venues don’t match the standard set here.

There were weary legs and a host of body’s nursing hangovers from those who had traveled the night before. For those traveling down 3 hours on the day there was the mad rush from the car looking for the loo.

Action got under way with no clear favourites, Could home field advantage suit the teams from Bournemouth & Poole or would it be the travelers who could parade the trophy around the towns finest drinking haunts later that night?

Strouden Park were straight out the blocks with a 4-0 victory over fellow South Coasters Ace Villa 4-0. Willenhall United (Wolves) were looking confident and went unbeaten through the group stages winning 5 from 5, Real Est8 were also unbeaten recording 4 wins and then drawing their final game in an excellent match with Winmoor FC.

Sporting Dingoes (Oxford) proved the days most inconsistent team. 2 defeats left them looking down and out but they came back with a bang recording 3 victories. They needed to win by 6 goals in their final group game and in true style won 7-1 against a tiring I.D team (Cambridge)

The Elephants were looking a good unit, organised on the pitch and dressed to match in kits and training tops – only the finest from Telford Market.

The knock out stages saw Willenhall lose their 100% record and say bye to the competition losing 1-0 to Winmoor in one of the days finest games. The Elephants sent Delphini back to bar where they seemed more than capable of holding their own (They were also spotted out late that night on Bournemouth Pier using that Essex charm on the local ladies). Real Est8 and Sporting Dingoes went to penalties with the Dingoes holding their nerve, and TPSS (Essex) were taken apart by Strouden Park.

The Semis saw Elephants beat a tiring Winmoor 4-0 and Strouden Park flying the flag for Littledown with a 3-1 win over the young Dingoes side.

Champion Soccer official Wayne Sherwood took charge of the final. Both teams still looked fresh and ready for action as the adrenaline carried them through the aches and pains from the day.

In a close fought final it was Strouden Park who triumphed 3-1, but in truth it could have gone either way, Park proving the more clinical in front of the sticks.

Steve Galimore, Brian Batt and Bruce Sims were the days other officials who did well to keep order in some firey local derbys, and some very close games as the business end of the tournament approached.

The day on the whole was a success and thanks to all teams for their participation.
